Matlock Artists Society celebrated its 30th birthday this month with a drawing and water colour demonstration and a special lunch.

Set up in 1989, the group - originally known as the Tawney House Artists Society - was just 13-stong. Now membership has swelled to 65 with a sizeable list of artists waiting to join.

Hands-on workshops are held each month so members can learn from the skills of visiting artists who demonstrate their expertise in watercolour, acrylic, oils and pastels.

In addition to its range of social events and activities, the Society runs two regular groups - The Portrait Group and the Mutual Help Group - both open to non members.

Each year the Society showcases the work of members with its Sumer Art Exhibition with prizes for the best pictures including the public choice award. This year's exhibition - at The Gothic Warehouse, Cromford Wharf, Cromford from Monday 29 July to Sunday 4 August - will be opened by Anna-Louise Pickering.

Current Chair of the Group Linda Orchard commented: "The Society has never been busier and continues to go from strength to strength.

We have a full programme of events and opportunities for local artists to develop their skills, share their experience and enjoy creating together."
